Getting Organized
I'm not an "organized" person. Never have been, never will be. I'm the farthest (furthest?) from a Type A personality that you will get. Most people I know would be absolutely horrified by the way my apartment looks, but luckily I've mastered the "Hey, I'm in the neighborhood and would love to stop by!" holy shit my house is disgusting what can I clean in 5 minutes so as not to repel my friends and family away from me forever routine.
But, even though I can never manage to put my clothes away or clean dishes from 3 days ago, there are some things in my life that I absolutely NEED to have organized. And the main thing is my desk.
When I was growing up, most of the time my room like it had just been hit by a category 28 hurricane. Except my desk. My desk was always SPOTLESS. At around age 7, my mom bought several little plastic trays for my desk drawers with which I could organize my "supplies". At that age, those supplies consisted of a few colored paper clips, a random assortment of mis-matched Barbie shoes, several tubes of Bonnie Bell lip treats, and some fun, brightly colored pens that my Grammie bought me in an effort to teach me the art of writing letters. (A total win for Grammie. I still to this day love to send handwritten letters and should probably be the poster woman for the USPS. Except for thank you letters. Don't even get me started. I am TERRIBLE when it comes to thank you letters.) But as I grew older that desk became a huge part of my daily life. I would do my math assignments on that desk, spend hours with my mom's sewing machine making brightly colored scrunchees for my friends, write letters, eventually type many of my college papers when I purchased my very own laptop, hide my VERY PERSONAL pre-adolescent diaries under mounds of old schoolwork, thinking no one would EVER think to look there for my deepest, darkest secrets...
I loved that desk, but since I moved out at the tender age of 19 and left my wonderful 3 (huge) drawer oak desk behind, I've never had a REAL desk, but always found a way to make it work. Until The Scientist and I moved in. It wasn't until November of this past year that I even unpacked my desk/office supplies! Our apartment is so teeny and the desk that he has was already packed to the gills when I moved in, which has caused me great distress. I finally purchased a dirt cheap desk from Ikea 2 weeks ago and have since been finding a few little accessories to add to it. And WOW what a difference. Even though I sit in front of a computer my entire day, I love coming home to my little corner of our apartment.
The Scientist also hung this lovely lamp from the ceiling in my little corner (just one, minus the track):

One thing that's been really frustrating to me, though, is the lack of attractive "Charging Stations" I've been able to find. The really nice ones are either WAY overpriced or only come in a really dark wood, which wouldn't work because everything we have is a natural wood color. I would love to find one in a stainless steel or brushed metal of some kind, but no luck.
Also, one of my favorite Seattleites, Maggie, recently posted the journey of her home office organization and I LOVE it! (I love everything she posts, check her out!)
And P.S., my mom still has that desk in her guest room. It is used more as a linen cabinet than a desk these days, but she never removed the glow in the dark stars I stuck to it or the initials I engraved with an exacto knife will always be there...

I'm SO with you. I have to fight my sloppiness hard. I am really clean in terms of like dealing with food instantly and always windexing but I'm sloppy with my clothes and cds etc. So annoying! But, I'm with you on the desk organization! SO necessary!
Oooh I LOVE that light! And I agree, it does make a difference! It bothers me if I have to leave my desk at work messy before I go home for the day.
Yeah... I like to pretend I'm organized but I'm so not. Right now I know I should be organizing our pantry but it probably won't get done. Because I'm lazy.
My house is a delicate balance of clean/organized and messy. I have a couple of little nooks where I stash things so there's at least the appearance of order.
I've been wanting to get a desk and make a little "home office" area in my house (instead of the TV tray that holds my laptop now), but my place is so tiny that I don't know if its possible.
I wish Torsten would share your desire. My desk is always neat and organized and his is always covered with piles of crap. It drives me craaaazy.
Ah ha! I wondered which of you put the glow in the dark stickers on there :)
I need to organize my life times a gazillion!!!
My grandparents' Christmas presents are still sitting on my desk at work.
Giant FAIL.
