Leavin' On A...Ferry Boat

I'm currently packing for a 5 day getaway to the San Juan Islands.  The San Juans are home to some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen and it's my favorite part of Washington state.  I would love to retire up there some day.  There are a few small towns on the islands and a thriving art community.  There are also several resorts that are popular wedding and honeymoon destinations.  It's also a major feeding and breeding ground for several pods of Orca whales.  They can be spotted from May through September.  Sadly, this gal had no such luck, but you can get pretty good views of them from some of the state parks on the islands, and sometimes they'll swim along right next to the ferry.

My uncle and aunt rented a house on Orcas Island (so named because it's sort of shaped like an Orca whale) for a week so we could all spend some time together.  My uncle and aunt live in the Bay Area, just East of Napa, so we don't see them all that often.  They rented the same house 2 summers ago and I can't WAIT to go back!  Here are a few pictures from our last trip:

I took this shot from the kayak.  Mt. Baker is in the background.

Also taken from the kayak, this is the house.

This is the view from the deck.  Sucia Island in the background, and Vancouver, BC is behind that off in the distance.

I took this one from the top of Mt. Constitution, the highest point on the island.  This is one of the most breathtaking views I've ever seen.

This is my uncle and me jumping from a bridge over Cascade Lake.  So fun!

My mum and I are heading up early tomorrow morning to meet up with my uncle and aunt, who've been up there since yesterday.  The Scientist will be joining us on Friday, and some friends may come up for one of the days as well.  We'll be kayaking, biking, running, hiking, EATING and relaxing.  We'll also be there for the 4th of July!  There will be a big fireworks display (and I LOVE me some fireworks), a parade and other such patriotic events.

There is Wi Fi at the house so I may post some pictures while I'm up there.  I'm really looking forward to spending some quality time with my uncle and aunt, two of my favorite people!

What are your plans for the 4th of July holiday?

My grandparents live on Orcas, so I've spent what seems like half my life up there. I got a little sick of it for a few years, but now I can't wait to go up! If you've never been there on the 4th before, it's great! I love when the little community gets together like that. I've been in the parade more times than I could count.

Also, I always thought it was shaped more like a horeshoe. Where do they get the Orca from?

ooh, sounds like a great way to spend the long weekend! I wish we had something fun planned, but it's a low key weekend around the house for us at this point.

@Hannah - Thanks! I feel quite lucky :-)

@Pasha - We used to go up there a lot as kids and I thought it was really boring, but now I try to get up there as much as possible! I'm excited to experience the 4th up there. I'm so used to all the craziness here in Seattle that it'll be nice to have a small community 4th of July.

@Megan - It truly is one of the most beautiful places. And it's VERY close to Canada. You can see Vancouver and Victoria from the islands.

@NSC - You should definitely come out here! The beauty is very different from what you see on the East Coast. NH for the weekend sounds lovely!

@Mrs. Buck - Sometimes it's nice to stay home on a long weekend. You can relax and don't have to worry about crowds and traffic! Enjoy yourself :-)

I can't even remember the last time I went to the San Juans (unless you count Victoria, which I don't). Your pics are beautiful and make me want to hop on a ferry!

Boyfriend's sister got married there last year (Deer Harbor Inn has the MOST comfy bed I've ever slept in) and I've been begging him to take me whale watching since!

I spent a summer during high school in the Seattle area and part of our time was spent biking through the San Juan islands. Breath-taking - what a wonderful way to spend a long weekend!

We're staying put in Chicago. Hosting one cookout. Going to another one. And generally just enjoying summer in Chicago!
