Highlights

We returned from our island getaway yesterday afternoon.  It was a glorious time spent kayaking, hiking, eating, drinking, watching fireworks and just plain relaxing.

A few of my favorite parts:

  • Eating freshly caught fish every single night for dinner (halibut and salmon)
  • Launching the kayaks every evening from our own private little beach
  • Walking around town and enjoying the festivities of a small town 4th of July celebration
  • Pancake breakfast at the local firehouse
  • Smoked salmon feed at the local Lion's Club
  • Seeing countless deer, including tons of teensy weensy beensy little bitty babies!
  • Spending time with my uncle and aunt, two of my favorite people in the whole world
  • Laughing, laughing and more laughing
I didn't take too many pictures, but here are some that I did take:

That sounds divine, really. I spy a bottle of Chimay in one of the photos, do you like beer? Chimay is awesome, haven't had it in awhile though.

The first and last pictures are my favorite! In that first one the water is practically sparkling! And anyone who creates anything in an American flag over 4th of July weekend is awesome in my book!

@Carrie - It is most definitely Chimay! One of my favorites!

@Hannah - Yep, we just couldn't resist. It had all been caught either the same day or the day before. It was incredible!

@J - It was SO soothing and relaxing. We would kayak for hours and take in all the beauty (and the gorgeous houses along the shore line)!

@Becky - The water was so beautiful in the sunshine, and REALLY clear! We could see to the bottom where there were all kinds of fish, starfish and kelp.

@Jess - It WAS awesome. I can't wait to go back!

@E - It was a wonderful getaway. 5 days of relaxation! Made it really hard to come home, though :-)

Seafood, sun, horses, wine on the deck? What a wonderful vacation! I love the photo of the ferry dock. How bad was the wait on the way home?

I love San Juan! It sounds like you had such a great weekend and fresh fish for dinner every night? Yum, mother may I! Glad you got to spend time with cherished people among the gorgeous views!

You tease us with baby deer but have no pictures!? :)

That salmon bake is making my mouth water! I love the San Juans. I've been wanting to head to Orcas for some camping but haven't gotten my act together. Looks like a fantastic weekend!

Looks nice! I am jealous of the fresh fish. Oddly enough my sister made the same cake you did!

Oh my God. Why didn't you invite me?!

So effing jealous.

@Sarah - It is definitely breathtaking. I don't think I could ever get tired of it!

@Yellow House - It was the perfect getaway. We got in line pretty early on Monday for the ferry and had no problem getting on, but I heard the wait was 4 to 5 hours later in the day. Eeek!

@Caitlin - I can't think of a better way to spend the holiday weekend! I love the islands, too. They're my favorite place on earth.

@Megan - We saw most of the babies from the car so I couldn't get a good picture! I tried, though!

@Nikki - The smoked salmon was TO DIE FOR. Freshly smoked with a delicious brown sugar glaze. YUM. Now that the weather's nice, you should definitely get up there! I love the campgrounds on Orcas.

@Lemon Gloria - It is some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen! If you ever get over to this side of the country, you should check it out.

@NSC - The fresh fish was SO good. I think the flag cake is a pretty popular item these days. So festive and delicious!

@Sara - Next time, promise ;-)
