Once a Scientist, Always a Scientist
I'm pretty sure if you asked most women about the best present they ever received from their boyfriend, they would likely say jewelry, clothing/accessories, a spa experience or a vacation, or something along those lines. Leave it up to my boyfriend, The Scientist, to give me something totally unrelated to any of those things, but equally as awesome.
For Christmas this year, he got us genetic testing. Say what you will about this being the oddest, most unromantic gift*, but I was absolutely THRILLED when I opened this gift! We're both science oriented and try to keep up to speed on all the big happenings in the exciting world of genetics. We also plan on having children someday and have talked many times about how we'd like to know as much about our genetic past before we contribute to the future gene pool.
Our testing kits provide us with a tube for a saliva sample, which is then mailed in and analyzed. It takes about 6 weeks to get the results. It will test for around 100 different diseases and also give us a look into our ancestry. Neither of us is aware of any life threatening diseases in our family, but who knows what kind of latent, recessive genes have been hiding in our DNA for generations? I can't wait to find out!
*He also got us 4 weeks of dancing lessons which we started this past week. Pretty darn romantic if you ask me. :-)
Also, thank you all SO much for your sympathy and suggestions for the flea problem. It actually got worse before it got better, but it's finally under control. I hope it never happens to any of you (or us again!).

Oh that's so sweet! I think it's a great idea, the dance lessons were a nice touch to keep it romantic. ;) I'm interested in doing it myself, though I'm already leaning on adoption more than producing my own. But still...
that's awesome, that would be so fun to send in together and then get the results back. Romance doesn't have to mean flowers, etc. I think it's whatever is special and important to you- sounds like he nailed it. What a great idea.
I like that gift! My dad got my mom some family tree computer program for her birthday last year and she LOVES it! She even traced her side of the family all the way back to Einstein! So I guess Einstein is my very very distant cousin! It's amazing what you can find out with these things!
Interesting! I got my Dad the National Geographic ancestry kit which he enjoyed because it tells you where in Africa your ancestors most likely came from and then where they moved to. The more people swab their cheeks, the more information the database will have.
I feel your pain on the flea problem ... I got bed bugs when I went to San Francisco two summers ago and while they didn't follow me home, the bites on my body stayed around for 6 months. It took several dermatologist appointments, shots, prescriptions, etc to finally get rid of them. Any small bug problem makes me cringe now.
I want to do the genetic testing on my dogs! They are both from the shelter and I'd love to find out what breeds they are!
that is so cool!
That's really a cool gift idea! Particularly for the scientific minded folk like yourselves :) I think I'd be intrigued by my genetics as well, though. And hey, the dance class makes it all super romantic :)
What a unique gift idea! And I like that he threw in the dance classes for good measure. :)
I love the gift of DNA. That's hilarious, but also sounds like so much fun. You've turned yourselves into one big petri dish!
I graduated with a science major myself (I'm actually an engineering geek), so I think stuff like that is really cool, too. Props and fist bumps to the Scientist on a job well done!
What an awesome gift! I'm totally going to steal this idea.
