Cabin Fever
If we're friends on Facebook or you follow me on Twitter, you're likely well aware that I sprained my ankle last week. And it's bad. Really bad. My foot, ankle and lower leg have turned every color of the rainbow from the bruising and the swelling got to the point where my foot looked straight out of the scene from Harry Potter when Harry turns Mrs. Dursley's sister? (I forget who exactly it was) into a giant balloon.
It was so stupid, really. The Scientist and I were at his sister's rooftop birthday party on Wednesday night. I was wearing a pair of heels that are somewhat comfy, but just a teensy bit too big for me. After the party, we had to trek almost 20 blocks from Belltown to Downtown to catch our bus home. Being on my feet all night combined with the long walk made for some sore feet, so when we got to the bus stop I leaned against the block of newspaper containers and was switching my weight back and forth between my feet to relieve some of the discomfort. Because the shoes are just slightly too big, my left shoe slipped slightly off as I was balancing back onto that foot. I rolled my ankle and FELL DOWN. I was basically standing still, but managed to fall down and sprain my damn ankle. Grace? I do not have it.
But the worst part? I have pretty much been immobile since last Wednesday night (as the Seattle weather has finally turned nice, no less) and I'm going out. of. my. mind. I've been doing a lot of sleeping, watching A LOT of Dr. Who, and finding myself completely drawn in my Mad Men. It's been in my Netflix queue for ages, but I just discovered that it's on instant now! My eyes have pretty much glazed over from all the TV watching.
My mum brought crutches over for me yesterday morning, so I was finally able to get out of the house. What a relief that was! All we did was go to Trader Joe's and then grab a quick bite to eat, but it felt so good to be out in the fresh air.
Here's some photographic evidence of the damage I caused myself (apologies for the fuzzy phone pictures):

On the bus ride home. The swelling started almost instantly.
Swelling and bruising on the inner ankle
Balloon foot!
Discoloration spanning most of my lower leg as a result of constant elevation (also, can't get U2's Elevation out of my head)
I missed class last Thursday, but am able to make up the work. I'll be back at school tomorrow. Thankfully my instructors have been very understanding and I'm hopeful that this injury won't get in the way of my academic goal for the summer.
Have you ever sprained your ankle? What do you do to cure cabin fever?

Ouch! I've never sprained my ankle, but I really feel for you on that one.
Not sure what to say about cabin fever - there's only so much internet you can look through before you lose interest... I usually end up in an iTunes black hole where I start looking at music and all of a sudden three hours have passed. Wikipedia does that to me, too.
Oh. My. God. That looks terrrrrrrible! I'm so sorry! I simultaneously sprained my ankle and got a hairline fracture in it when I was 16. I let it be weak and sad til I was 22. then I finally did physical therapy for it and am now able to run long distances finally. Make sure you give it lots of rest and an insane amount of support!
And as for cabin fever ... man, netflix is your best friend right now. Stumbleupon.com is a fantastic timewaster. I also have done a 1000 piece puzzle, and when really ridiculously bored, a nice game of "taste the liquor cabinet" can be sufficient for a few hours of fun!
Seriously hope you have a very speedy recovery!
You poor thing, Stevie! Hope you get better quick!
Agh!!!! Horrendous. That looks terribly painful! :( I have never sprained or broken anything (knock on wood) in my life, so I can only imagine the pain you're feeling! My boyfriend sprains, breaks, you name it to basically every bone in his body, in fact he just sprained his ankle a few weeks ago and his new favorite thing is for me to "massage" the ankle and the surrounding parts! I hope it gets better soon!
Yikes! Hope you feel better soon!
Ouch, that looks so sore. The first time I sprained my ankle was in grade school, doing long jump. Ever since then I've had a weak ankle that twists really easily doing fun things like... walking :(
Cabin fever? Hmm, maybe sit outside with a good book? I hope it's feeling back to normal soon!
Ouch!! At least you are letting Don Draper help you heal. That's what I would do. :)
Yikes that is quite the swollen ankle! Thankfully I haven't sprained an ankle in quite a long time. Remember to RICE- rest, ice, compression, elevation. Hopefully you will be back on your feet soon!
omg that looks so bad! i'm a big homebody so I have no problem staying at home. But maybe I would invite friends over? or bake, or wastch movies, and read magazines, oooo or host board game night!
oh my gosh that looks so painful! I broke my foot in college, but was able to stay relatively mobile the entire time. I even walked on my broken foot until I had surgery. But whoa, that looks like it hurts. I would be all movie marathon! But I can see how that would get lame. I would maybe get a book?
UGH! I am so sorry, Steph! That's awful.
One winter when I was... 7? 8? I sprained my ankle after I thought it would be a good idea to run down the big slide in the school playground since it was iced over. Yes, I said "run" down it. As in, on my feet. As in, an ice-covered metal slide. Ouch. I honestly don't even remember what I did to keep from going insane, so maybe I failed at that. ;) Hope you feel better soon!
Oh my goodness! That looks SO very painful:( Hope the swelling goes down soon.
Oh my gosh it is huge! That looks painful I'm sorry. I hope it gets better soon. I popped something out of place in my foot when B and I were doing the dirty dancing lift once. It was so painful and I had wear a brace forever. No cute shoes.
Get better soon!
Oh ouch!! That looks so painful!! I hope it gets better soon!
Oh my gosh dude, those pictures are insane! Glad to hear you're starting to be on the mend - but don't push yourself too quickly!
I rolled my ankle a few times when I was younger (and a gymnast), and I was on crutches in high school when my marching band director accidentally pushed a sousaphone on my foot. Yeah. Good times.
