I Just Kept Running...
Remember back in 2010 when I ran my first half marathon? Remember how pumped I was? Remember when I said I couldn't wait to run another one? Remember, remember, remember? Yeah...since then I've barely even hit the pavement. At this point running 2 miles seems like a challenge, let alone 13.1.
But I'm not letting that get in my way. I'm currently, officially, registered for two half marathons this year. I knew I wanted to do the Rock & Roll half again, but it gets more and more expensive each year. I'd been hemming and hawing about it when a good friend of mine asked if I was interested in doing a half with her some time this year. Having the accountability of training with someone makes a huge difference, so I gladly said yes.
We researched several races in the Seattle area and asked around to find out which ones were better than others. We eventually decided on the Snoqualmie Cinco de Mayo Half Marathon (might want to hit mute - music plays on page load). I haven't officially started training, but I've been on a few walk/runs to get some mileage in. I plan to start a more rigorous training plan when I'm done with classes for the quarter, which is March 15th. That'll give me about 7 weeks before the race to prepare.
The course should be beautiful. It winds through the Mt. Si/Three Forks Natural Area and along the Snoqualmie River. It's mostly flat with a few rolling hills, so it should be a fun race!

Once I registered for the Cinco de Mayo race, I figured one is enough and thought about not doing the Rock & Roll this year. But I've been discussing that race with a few other bloggers and didn't want to back out of a fun opportunity to meet up with them, so today I coughed up the exorbitant race fee and officially registered! The course is new this year, but parts of it are fairly similar to the old course so I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do, training wise.
My time from 2010 was 2:50:30. My goal for the Cinco de Mayo race is to beat that time, even if only by half a second. But I'm putting this out there - for the Rock & Roll, my goal is to finish in 2:30:00 or under!
Have you ever participated in a half-marathon or other running race? Tell me about your experience!

I've never done any sort of run but I have friends who have and I'm beyond amazed by them! Such a cool thing to say you've done!
After seeing everyone talk about the Rock and Roll today, I thought about joining, but I just don't have the money at this point. And the other one you are doing is a weekend I already know I'll be out of town. :( We'll have to come up with another option..
I've never run one, but I'm planning to sometime this year!
hahah well... I'm glad your head is in the right place!! I did Cross-Country all through high school (and the summer training). However, now- running to me is a nightmare, I hate it. If I don't have my mean old coach driving alongside me with his megaphone... i really have a hard time getting motivated (I was motivating by hate in those instances).
Good for you for planning ahead and signing up! I'm sure you'll be happy in the end :)
Nicole mentioned the Seattle half y'all are doing this summer and I really want to come! If that doesn't work out (likely), I might be planning another trip to the Tacoma area in August or September. I'm so ready to register for another race!
HAHAAAAAA no. i am, how you say? Not A Runner. i am so awed by people who are/do, though!
Wow it looks like that Snoqualmie race should be beautiful!!
I don't think that I have any halfs in my future...at least not this year. Although I said that I was done after last year's half, I could potentially see myself doing another one. We'll see.
